Experience as an ACE Program Participant at the National University of Singapore

Hello, I am Yuka Abe, a second-year student majoring in Intercultural Communication. As a member of the second cohort of the ACE Program, I had the incredible opportunity to study abroad for one semester at the National University of Singapore (NUS). My exchange took place at NUS College, where students from various disciplines come together, providing a rich and diverse learning environment.

In the "Global Narratives" course, we delved deep into the analysis of narratives, visual works, and art pieces, exploring our own interpretations. This was a new and challenging experience for me, as I had never engaged in such a profound analysis of artistic works before. With a small class size, discussions were a regular feature, and expressing my thoughts was sometimes challenging. However, I felt a sense of growth when classmates understood and supported my ideas, whether in agreement or disagreement.

Another course, "Gender and Ecology in Asia," introduced me to the field of Ecofeminism, a discipline that intertwines women and nature in its considerations. Initially, I struggled to grasp the concepts in this new field, and contributing effectively to group discussions was challenging. Yet, by acknowledging what I didn't know and seeking help from fellow students, I managed to earn an A- on the final report.

Throughout my study abroad experience, I often faced moments of struggle in both classes and daily life. However, embracing these challenges and giving my best effort allowed me to build confidence and grow as an individual.

In the attached video, I discuss the differences between Rikkyo University and the National University of Singapore, touching on the curriculum and student life. I hope you enjoy watching and learning about my unique experience.

Thank you for considering my contribution to the university's website.

Sincerely,
Yuka Abe
