What I gained from studying at Peking University

One of the courses I took at Peking University (PKU) was English News Reading. This course is conducted in the PKU School of Journalism and Communication. Through class, we read through various newspapers and articles and analyzed the characteristics of media in both China and other countries. In this course, students can acquire the ability to sift through and choose correct information, especially important in the world today where so much information is coming and going rapidly while the way to receive the information is left up to individuals.

Outside of class, I participated in the International Cultural Festival held in early November, as a member of the PKU Japanese Student Association. I performed Soran-Bushi on stage, a Japanese traditional dance performance with 15 other Japanese students. The event was a great success, with overflowing visitors from both in and out of the university. Through the event, I realized again how there are so many students from all over the world gathering and studying together at PKU. I was astonished by the scale of a world-class university and was proud that I was able to study with all my friends from various countries and cultures. Through my study abroad experience at PKU, I realized that I’ve had so many selfish images and biases towards China, despite the fact that it is a neighboring country. The experience of meeting and interacting with the local people and studying with fellow Chinese students, who were kinder and warmer than I expected they would be, was an irreplaceable and unforgettable experience. I swear that my experience here at Peking University will be an unforgettable memory for the rest of my life.
